Bayou Classic
Rival Team: Grambling State Tigers
The Bayou Classic between Grambling State and Southern is played each year on the Saturday after Thanksgiving in New Orleans. The game is one of the biggest games in the SWAC and is a must-see for any Grambling State or Southern fan. The series between these two historically black universities dates back to 1932, and the Tigers hold a 22-21 lead in the all-time series. The football game isn’t the only event at the Bayou Classic as the Battle of the Bands between Grambling’s World Famed Tiger Marching Band and Southern’s Human Jukebox is arguably the bigger draw. Don’t miss the Bayou Classic as it’s one of Southern’s biggest events of the year.
Boombox Classic
Rival Team: Jackson State Tigers
The BoomBox Classic is an annual rivalry game played between the Jackson State Tigers and the Southern Jaguars. The two SWAC rivals first met in 1929, but the rivalry didn’t kick off until 1958. It’s not just the action on the field that is a must-see when Jackson State and Southern square off the battle of the band between the schools is just as big and is where the rivalry gets its name. If you’re attending the BoomBox Classic, make sure to stick around for the 5th Quarter band performances after the game.

Traditions
Jaguar Cage
Southern used to have a live Jaguar mascot named Lacumba on campus. However, he died of natural causes in 2004. While Lacumba II was never replaced, you can still see the jaguar cage outside Ace W. Mumford Stadium.
Homecoming Parade
There is no better time to attend a Southern game than homecoming. Alumni from all over the country come back to Southern University to enjoy the homecoming parade making it a must-see for any Jaguars fan. The parade is also the perfect way to kick off game day, so arrive early and enjoy the parade before the homecoming game.

Reserved Parking
Southern offers lots of reserved parking around the stadium, so those of you looking to tailgate before the game will want to make sure to reserve a spot.
RV Lots
If you’re bringing an RV or an oversized vehicle, then the RV lots are the place for you. Just make sure that you're not bringing a motorhome or fifth-wheeler as they’re not permitted in the RV lots.

The Southern Jaguars have won 19 conference titles and nine black college football national championships helping build an incredible fan base. You can feel the fans’ passion all throughout the game as no matter what the score you’ll see Jaguars fans up on their feet dancing and cheering. If you’re looking to attend a football game filled with passionate fans, then you’ll struggle to find a better place to take in a game than Southern.
In addition to an excellent crowd, the Southern marching band known as The Human Jukebox is also spectacular. The Human Jukebox put on an incredible show at every game and are worth the price of admission all on their own. The atmosphere at a Southern Jaguars football game is always great, but it’s extra special when attending a whiteout game. Southern fans all dress in white for the whiteout creating an intimidating atmosphere that will strike fear into any opponent.
